The New Coffee Sensation

Dalgona coffee became an internet sensation due to the effects of the coronavirus. As more and more people were forced to stay at home, a new coffee “challenge” was created among social media enthusiasts, especially on Instagram.

Dalgona coffee got its name in Macau when a South Korean actor mentioned that the drink resembles the Korean candy- dalgona (although I’m not sure it is the correct way to spell it).
While relatively new to the world, the process of “whipping” instant coffee is popular in some regions of the world, especially in India.

Making Dalgona:

The ingredients and preparing method are according to the traditional dalgona. However, once you feel comfortable enough with this recipe, you can begin experimenting with other combinations that match your flavor preference.

Ingredients for 1 cup:
2 tbsp Instant coffee
2 tbsp Sugar
2 tbsp Hot water
1 cup of cold milk
2 ice cubes

Start by whipping the coffee, sugar, and water in a small bowl. Continue whipping until you get to a pudding-like texture. This may take a while, so you can alternatively use an electric hand whisker to make the job easier.

In a coffee cup, place the ice cubes followed by the cold milk.
Scoop the whipped coffee evenly on top of the milk.

Congratulations, you have yourself a cup of dalgona.
The whipped coffee would be intense in flavor, and it’s highly recommended you’ll mix it with the milk before drinking.

Nowadays, there are a lot of different combinations and inventions to dalgona. There’s no right or wrong, it’s about what you like and your taste buds.
You can experiment with your own recipe by switching white sugar to brown sugar to get more of caramel notes. You can choose to have the milk hot rather than cold. Maybe you’d like to sprinkle a little cinnamon on top of the whip etc.
